Okay ladies and gents, this will be my last review for video baby cameras for a while, but I’ll be sure to keep posting issues and things I discover with my new video baby monitor.
My husband Steven purchased the Motorola Digital Baby Monitor (3.5 screen with additional camera). The cost was less than $1 higher than the Summer Infant Baby Touch Digital Color Video Monitor.
I used this monitor for 6 days. I used it a lot longer than I used any of the other video baby monitors. The reason I used it longer was because the features between the Motorola Digital Video Baby Monitor and the Summer Infant Baby Touch Digital Color Video Monitor are virtually the same. At least the ones I was most interested in. There are a couple things the Motorola has that the Summer doesn’t have and vice versa.
- As far as video quality, both the Motorola Digital video baby monitor and the Summer infant video monitor have very good video quality. I’ve been trying really hard to see which one is different. I’ll have to say the image on the Motorola is a little better. Both also have the capability of zoom and it’s just as bad on both systems. Not that most people would ever use this feature. I personally don’t care about the zoom.
- I think the sound is better on the Summer infant video monitor. This is actually the only thing that bothered me with the Motorola Digital Video baby monitor. It picked up sound great but it was almost too much noise for me and I couldn’t turn the noise down enough. I could actually hear Jason moving around in bed and the parent monitor was in the other room. And, yes it was on the lowest sound.
Both the Motorola and Summer have noise indicators which is great! Once I got used to the indicators, I could tell if Jason was playing quietly or if he was being rowdy. Likewise if a baby is just fussy we’ll know and if they’re shrieking, we’ll know that too. This makes it better when we want to keep the sound down low.- The range is perfect for my 2,400 sf home on both units.
- Interference. I think the Motorola is better. While I have very little interference with the Summer Infant Video Monitor, I have none with the Motorola. On the Summer Infant Video Monitor, when my Panasonic cordless rings, the video fuzzes and the audio hisses. But it stops when the phone stops ringing.
- The battery on the Motorola parent unit doesn’t seem to last as long as the one on the Summer Infant Video Monitor.
- I think the Motorola Digital Video Baby Monitor looks and feels much nicer.
- Both units have the Scan Feature which I absolutely adore and think anyone that has 2 active cameras want this feature.
- The Motorola doesn’t have a touch screen. I really like the Summer touch screen
- I like the Out of Range warning that the Motorola has. It reminds me of how I envision one of those prisoner ankle bracelets. Not that I have ever seen one of those, just in the movies.
The Motorola camera has a pan and tilt on it (only the unit with the 3.5 inch screen). I really like these features because it allows the parent to be able to adjust without entering the room. Both units are nearly silent while using the pan and tilt from the parent monitor.- The Motorola Digital Video Baby Monitor has a room temperature function so mom or dad can make sure the baby is comfortable temperature wise.
- The Motorola Digital Video Baby Monitor doesn’t have a battery back up on the camera. For me, this is a big deal as we have frequent power outages in Daytona Beach. Way too frequent.
In The End, Did I Pick The Motorola Digital Video Baby Monitor?
It was a real toss up between the Motorola and the Summer Infant Baby Touch. In fact, I’d be happy with either one because there is very little difference, but here’s why I kept the Summer Infant Baby Touch Digital Color Video Monitor.
1. I liked the audio better. In fact, I liked the audio a lot better. The Motorola played noises I didn’t want to hear on the lowest setting although I’d have been fine with it had I not tried the Summer Infant first.
2. The battery backup is really important to me and something I’m glad someone thought of. I sure hadn’t thought of it when I first started looking at video baby cameras.
3. I love the touch screen on the Summer Infant.
In the end, I chose the one that would be better for me and my needs. I hope I’ve been of some help to you and in your decision. We’re all so different and have higher or lower expectations of the things we purchase. Especially for our babies!
Much love goes out to you and your families.
